Most Rev. Donald Hying, bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Gary, delivers a message of life, hope, acceptance and love to a crowd of about 1,200 area school students and faculty during a 31st annual Prayer Service in Celebration of Life at Franciscan Health Dyer Oct. 4, conducted during national Respect Life Month. The theme of this year’s event, Be Not Afraid, was accentuated by remarks made by guest speaker Matt Schwartz, theological consultant for the Parish Success Group, a national Catholic ministry training and coaching agency, who stressed the good in each individual and the need to elevate the spirit and worth of others.

Topics and questions included working with the public to spread the faith and the state of a very changing church.
Historic St. John Lutheran Church of Tolleston Park in Gary Indiana, announces the installation of Rev. Delwyn Campbell, as Pastor for St. John and Strategic Mission Developer in the Community of Gary Indiana. “We are very excited for this opportunity to recommit our congregation to work our Lord has called us to do in this city,” said Mike Nicks, Secretary for St. John’s. “We hope to reestablish our longstanding Lutheran presence in this community. We have big plans including bringing back one of our Lutheran schools for the community.”
On Wednesday October 12th members of the community and guests gathered at Trinity Hall at St. Patrick Catholic Church for the 15th annual Community Prayer Breakfast. The event began with Chesterton Police Chief David Cincoski leading the attendees in the Pledge of Allegiance. Rev. James Mead from St. Patrick Catholic Church delivered the invocation and breakfast was served. After breakfast Master of Ceremonies Mike Harris took a moment to recognize community leaders in attendance, the Community Prayer Breakfast Committee and to thank business and individual supporters of the event. Rev. Aaron Ban has joined the Chesterton community as the pastor of St. John's United Church. He received a B.A. in Religious Studies from Carleton College in Minnesota and his Master of Divinity at Eden Seminary in St. Louis. He comes to us from a church in the St. Louis area, where he helped revitalize the congregation and built a youth group in the community.
Most Rev. Donald J. Hying, archbishop of the Gary Catholic Diocese, blesses with holy water attendees at a Rite of Blessing of the Altar and Dedication of the Chapel ceremony on Feb. 9 at Franciscan Health-Munster. The newly completed hospital chapel is named in honor of Blessed Maria Theresia Bonzel, founder of the Sisters of St. Francis of Perpetual Adoration.
Most Rev. Donald J. Hying, bishop of the Gary Catholic Diocese, was keynote speaker at a Franciscan St. Margaret Health - Hammond dinner program for clergy and spiritual care workers from area churches and hospitals Oct. 27. The dinner was in conjunction with the celebration of Pastoral Care Week (Oct. 25-31). Pastoral Care Week dates back to the 1980s, when the National Association of Catholic Chaplains adopted a resolution setting aside a week in which to celebrate and honor all those who participate in the pastoral/spiritual care ministries.
